![]() It became the center of the 'Gold Coast', the complex formed by Morrissey, Lyons and Howard, and the masterpiece of Kervick and Fagan. With its elaborate masonry and tall tower, Morrissey's exterior is most impressive. Morrissey Hall features some of the most elaborate architecture of any dorm on campus. ![]() The University chose Smoger & Company to build Morrissey Hall for $275,000, and Christman Brothers to construct Lyons for $200,000. They designed many of the school's new buildings during the 1920s. Fagan (1898-1951) were also professors at the Notre Dame department of architecture. The building of both dorms was assigned to the architecture firm of Kervick and Fagan. The construction of these dorms was a response to the high number of Notre Dame's collegiate students living off campus and the rapid increase in student population after World War I. Howard Hall was completed in 1925 as the first of three new freshman dorms built by president Walsh Morrissey and Lyons Halls were to be the next two. It is referred to as Morrissey Manor by its residents. Along with other buildings on Notre Dame's campus, it is on the National Register of Historic Places. First Down Moses, according to students, also signals that the Notre Dame football team is number one, hence the statue's hand pointing to the sky. Much like the South panel of the Hesburgh Library which was named Touchdown Jesus or the statue of Father Corby that is nicknamed Fair Catch Corby. As Notre Dame has a long history of renaming statues with football reference, Moses has been awarded the name of First Down Moses. Moses' hand is pointing into the sky to proclaim that there is only one God. The sculpture represents Moses lecturing the Israelites, who in his absence had fallen into idolatry. He was influenced by his mentor Ivan Meštrović who "Moses was the figure to which he most often returned." The sculpture was created at Notre Dame in plaster and then sent to Italy to be cast in bronze. Moses was created by Croatian sculptor Josip Turkalj. ![]() It is also stepping over a bull and represented with horns in its head. It is composed of the image of Moses pointing a finger to the sky with the table of commandments in the other hand. The sculpture was made by Josep Turkjali in plaster and was sent to Italy to be cast in bronze. It is located in the West side of Hesburgh Library located at the North quad of Notre Dame campus. Moses is a 17 ft sculpture with a 3inch tall bronze base and a 1.3 feet tall granite square base.
